One of the biggest American Cancer Society events of the year hosted an Erdheim-Chester Disease team!

Erdheim-Chester Disease Global Alliance (ECDGA), a non-profit based in DeRidder LA, continually searches for a cure for Erdheim-Chester Disease (ECD). ECD is a non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a very rare blood cancer, that affects fewer than one thousand patients around the world. Patients with this disease often go misdiagnosed for many years. Raising awareness is vital to finding the right diagnosis for such a rare disease.
En 2015, a Joe Lofaro le diagnosticaron esta enfermedad extremadamente rara y es consciente de la importancia de dar a conocer la ECD. Mientras se preparaba para el evento «Father Ryan Relay for Life» en Nashville (Tennessee), al que asistía el 22 de septiembre, Joe aprovechó la oportunidad para organizar un acto de sensibilización sobre la ECD la noche anterior. Este evento se celebraría tras la Semana de Concienciación sobre la ECD organizada por la ECDGA, que tiene lugar la segunda semana de septiembre, y coincidiría con el mes de concienciación sobre la histiocitosis, que se celebra durante todo el mes.
Con la presencia de 12 de sus compañeros de clase, Joe organizó una increíble cena de sensibilización sobre la ECD, en la que se repartieron camisetas de sensibilización sobre la ECD, se facilitó información, se fomentó el compañerismo y contó con la presencia de un periodista de asuntos públicos para dar a conocer la historia. A lo largo de la velada, se recaudaron más de $150 en el bote de donativos. Melinda Brown, que también es paciente de ECD y amiga muy cercana, asistió igualmente al evento.
On Saturday, Joe along with 50 other friends, family, and community members, all wearing the ECD Awareness team shirts, took the opportunity to raise a great deal of awareness by informing all that where curious about ECD. Unfortunately, the day would be cut short by a late summer rain shower that took place from 5:00 until 10:00 PM. However, on top of spreading ECD awareness, Joe’s team managed to raise $250 for the American Cancer Society, adding to the grand total of $203,000 for this year’s Father Ryan event. At this time, Father Ryan’s lifetime total contributions are over one million dollars!
