{"id":30072,"date":"2024-12-31T12:01:02","date_gmt":"2024-12-31T18:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.erdheim-chester.org\/?p=30072"},"modified":"2026-02-17T14:16:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T20:16:16","slug":"football-family-and-rare-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.erdheim-chester.org\/he\/football-family-and-rare-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Football, Family, and Rare Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A passion for football, and brothers love, showed one rare disease that family is first.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Chesnee Green<\/em><\/p>\n<p>September 1, Columbia, MO \u2013 Fall is upon us! \u00a0For many this means pumpkin spice and sweaters, for others it\u2019s the pigskin and gridiron: Football! \u00a0For the Lofaro brothers football season is a very special time.\u00a0 Since 2005, with all graduated from school, the brothers traveled to a different NCAA or pro stadium to meet and enjoy each other\u2019s company while watching Americas favorite sport. \u00a0Each one living in different states, it was their way to reconnect and have a little fun. \u00a0This year was especially important.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, one of the brothers, Joe Lofaro, was diagnosed with an extremely rare disease: Erdheim-Chester Disease (ECD).\u00a0 ECD is a non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis that effects only approximately one thousand patients around the world.\u00a0 This very complicated disease left Joe unable to join his brothers at the games over the past few years. \u00a0But Joe is a fighter, with his drive to gain yardage, great medical professionals, and medication, he joined in this year!<\/p>\n<p>The very first game of the year, University of Tennessee Martin vs. Mizzou, was the perfect game for the brothers to attend.\u00a0 Joe is a UT Martin Alumni, a prior employee, and has written a book on the sports legends of UT Martin.\u00a0 Not only did Joe attend the game, he and his brothers tailgated before the game, allowing fans to meet Joe, share some laughs, and spread awareness for ECD.<\/p>\n<p>ECD Awareness Week is the second week in September.
